The award was given for the study \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/pnasnexus\/pgad091\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Competitive Advantage of Sanctioning Institutions Revisited: A Multilab Replication<\/a>\u201d (<em>PNAS Nexus<\/em> 2(5), 2023, 1\u20138). The jury consisted of Nicole Kapelle (Dublin), Heinz Leitg\u00f6b (Leipzig), Ulrich Kohler (Potsdam), and Richard Traunm\u00fcller (Mannheim). It recognized the replication study for its theoretical significance, methodological rigor, and exemplary transparency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">This study replicates the influential experiment by \u00d6zg\u00fcr G\u00fcrerk, Bernd Irlenbusch, and Bettina Rockenbach (\u201cThe Competitive Advantage of Sanctioning Institutions,\u201d <em>Science <\/em>312(5770), 2006, 108\u2013111). It examines whether groups in which non-cooperative behavior is sanctioned by peers have a competitive advantage over groups in which no sanctions are imposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The background: When individual and collective interests come into conflict, individuals face a social dilemma: cooperation leads to higher collective payoffs, while self-interested behavior increases individual payoffs. In such dilemmas, people often join institutions and submit to rules that promote cooperation. This replication study examines the effectiveness of peer sanctions in promoting cooperative behavior across seven European laboratories with approximately 1,000 participants. The replication was pre-registered and utilized openly accessible data, codes, and materials. The result: If enough people are willing to bear the costs of punishing uncooperative behavior, those willing to cooperate perform better than those who are uncooperative.
