In 2025, the Academy of Sociology established an award that, to the best of our knowledge, is unique in the field of sociology worldwide—a replication award. With this award, we recognize studies that have made a significant contribution to the verification of research findings by replicating key elements of another study. This can take the form of a reproduction or reanalysis of existing studies using the same data, a replication using new data , or an adversarial collaboration between the authors of the original study and the replicators.

Why do we recognize replication studies? Reliable science depends on studies that test the robustness and generalizability of existing research findings. Although the need for replication studies is increasingly recognized, they still do not receive enough attention in research practice. With the AS Replication Award, we aim to change that and help replication studies gain greater recognition and visibility.

The AS Replication Award is presented at the biennial AS Congress. All AS members may nominate studies for the award. However, the authors of the replication study do not need to be AS members. The prize money currently amounts to 1,500 EUR.
