Our Mission

The Academy of Sociology is a professional association of social scientists who conduct research and teach in the field of analytical-empirical sociology, or who apply their findings in professional practice.
The Academy of Sociology was founded in Mannheim in 2017. This was preceded by a founding appeal signed by over 100 prominent social scientists. The Academy currently has about 400 members.
Our mission is to promote analytical-empirical sociology in every respect. Analytical-empirical sociology is grounded in theoretical analyses that are formulated as succinctly, clearly, and precisely as possible. Its conclusions are based on empirical findings obtained through controlled methods of social research. In this way, we also aim to contribute to scientifically sound, evidence-based policy. To this end, we engage in:

  • Exchange of information in research and teaching—for example, through conferences and support for early-career researchers
  • Representation of analytical-empirical sociology within national scientific bodies (e.g., DFG, RatSWD)
  • Transfer of research findings to the general public
  • International and interdisciplinary networking in the social sciences
