The Venice Seminar on Analytical Sociology: Theory and Empirical Applications is an annual international workshop on analytical-empirical sociology. It was founded in 1999 at LMU Munich by Rolf Ziegler as a seminar on rational choice and analytical-empirical sociology and has since evolved from a small doctoral workshop into an established international event with around 100 participants. Since 2024, the seminar has been jointly organized by the Academy of Sociology and LMU Munich.

The seminar takes place every year over four days in November on the island of San Servolo at Venice International University (VIU). The academic direction and organization rotate among Josef Brüderl, Katrin Auspurg, and Gerrit Bauer (LMU Munich).

The conference will focus on theoretical, methodological, and empirical contributions from analytical sociology and related fields of research. The program includes approximately 30 plenary presentations and about 25 poster presentations. The conference language is English.

Application and Participation

A call for presentations is typically sent out in June or July via the Academy of Sociology’s membership list. Applications are generally accepted for both oral presentations and posters. Interested parties may apply by submitting a short abstract; the exact deadlines and procedures are announced in each call.
